All You Need to Know About the Fappening

By this point in time, everyone has probably heard about this huge cyber-attack dubbed “The Fappening” or “Celebgate.” The even resulted in the publication of candid pictures of more than a hundred celebs over the Labor Day weekend way back in 2014. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kate Upton, Jennifer Lawrence, and various other popular celebrities were affected by the iCloud leaks.

The Fappening Timeline

It seems that the 1st pictures from the hack surfaced about five days prior to the even. On 08/26/2014, an anonymous poster claimed that they had naked pictures of Jennifer Lawrence and they were ready to “trade.” Another poster started posting blurred photos and requesting payments for the uncensored versions. Due to being somewhat short-tempered, the second poster began to upload uncensored photos after the community decided to ignore them.

On 08/31/2014, it all reached its boiling point when the leaked celebrity photos started flooding 4chan’s infamous /b/ board along with a list of more than a hundred celebs allegedly included in the pack. A couple of big names was mentioned – Kirsten Dunst, Kaley Cuoco, Ariana Grande, Yvonne Strahovski. Naturally, this caught on like wildfire, especially on Reddit where the leaks became the subject of an exceedingly fast-growing subreddit called r/TheFappening.

It did not take very long for the victims to respond. Some confirmed the authenticity of the photos, some denied it, but it was pretty obvious that it was their poor attempt at damage control. On 01/09/2014, Apple patched a weakness that enabled the hackers to guess a password by way of brute-forcing it.

On 20/09/2014, the 2nd set of pictures was released. The victims included Kim Kardashian, Gabrielle Union, Amber Heard, Rihanna, Hope Solo, Vanessa Hudgens, Kate Bosworth, and Scarlett Johansson, among many others. Six days later, the 3rd set was uploaded, containing additional pictures of Jennifer Lawrence, along with various racy snaps of Anna Kendrick, Misty May Treanor, Carly Foulkes, Brooke Burns, Mena Suvari, Alexandra Chando, Lauren O’Neil, and Kelli Garner.

New Celebrity Leaks (2014-2019)

Even though they are not a part of the original leak, newer pictures have surfaced throughout the years. They come from different sources, but “the Fappening” is used as an umbrella term for any and all leaked celebrity photos these days. In these last five years, we’ve seen leaked pictures of Brie Larson, Miley Cyrus, Belle Delphine, and countless others.

Thanks to the hackers’ ever-growing proficiency, we now get leaked celebrity pictures on a semi-weekly basis. Sometimes you get irrelevant Una Healy or Amirah Dyme, but sometimes you get to see someone like as Ellie Goulding or Rihanna (again).
